About Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute

The Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI) was founded in 1947 to promote the exchange of current information on the use and management of marine resources in the Gulf and Caribbean region. From its beginning, GCFI has endeavored to involve scientific, governmental, and commercial sectors to provide a broad perspective on relevant issues, and to encourage dialogue among groups that often operate in relative isolation from one another. For 37 years, GCFI operated as an informal association under the sponsorship of the University of Miami. In 1985, with encouragement from the University, GCFI became an independent not-for profit corporation formally dedicated to its original purposes. The Vision of the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute is to become the most comprehensive and inclusive network in the Region for the exchange and dissemination of information on marine and estuarine science and resource issues. GCFI will accomplish this vision by developing partnerships with and facilitating communications among governmental and educational institutions, conservation and fisher organizations, and corporate entities. The Mission of GCFI is to advance the goals of sustainable use, wise management, conservation, and restoration of marine and estuarine fisheries and resources in the Region by providing a forum for the exchange of information and perspectives among decision-makers, scientists, managers, educators, resource users, and students.
