About Healthy City Design Congress

The Healthy City Design Congress and Awards (HCD) is taking place at The Lowry, MediaCity in Salford, Greater Manchester on 20th & 21st October 2026. Bringing together an international community to create healthier, more equitable & sustainable cities & communities. In collaboration with the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design at the Royal College of Art, HCD convenes city leaders, urban designers, planners, public health professionals, policymakers, researchers, developers, investors and community champions from across the UK and around the world. The two day programme features inspiring keynote addresses, expert panels, interactive workshops and research presentations. Showcasing innovative approaches and evidence that link urban environments to human health and wellbeing. A highlight of the congress is the HCD Awards, which celebrate excellence and leadership in designing and planning healthy places and infrastructure. The awards recognise outstanding projects, research and initiatives that demonstrate positive impacts on physical and mental health, equity and inclusion, active living, environmental sustainability and climate resilience. Moving between cities every two years, in 2026 HCD will be hosted in partnership with Salford City Council, MediaCity and regional and international collaborators, providing a valuable platform for cross-sector dialogue, knowledge exchange and networking. Reinforcing the importance of collaboration and investment in shaping cities and communities that support health, wellbeing, inclusive economic growth, social opportunity and sustainable futures for all.
