About Hungarian Water Polo Federation

Introduction Water polo is Hungary's most successful team sport. The men’s team boasts nine Olympic golds, four World Championships, and thirteen European Championships, topping medal tables across major competitions. The women’s team has won two World Championships and three European Championships, making water polo a Hungarian passion for nearly a century. The Hungarian Water Polo Federation (MVLSZ), with over 170 clubs, is a public benefit organization dedicated to the sport's growth in Hungary, acting as the national governing body. Since 1989, MVLSZ has promoted water polo independently from the Hungarian Swimming Association. INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE As a member of World Aquatics (formerly FINA) and European Aquatics (formerly LEN), MVLSZ represents Hungary internationally, driving the sport’s national and global growth. Our goal is to make Hungary a frequent host of top international water polo events. Since hosting early tournaments in 1926 and 1958, Budapest has welcomed the European Championships in 2001, 2014, and 2020, Men’s Champions League finals, and FINA World Championships in 2017 and 2022. Hungary also hosts youth tournaments, including the Junior World Championships in 2013 and 2018 and the first U15 Girls’ European Championship in 2021. DOMESTIC COMPETITION SYSTEM MVLSZ oversees Hungary's open competition system, organizing men’s, women’s, youth, and senior championships. Nearly 200 officials help run the National Championship and Hungarian Cup, creating more opportunities each year. NATIONAL TEAMS MVLSZ dedicates nearly half its budget to preparing national teams. Providing top conditions and expert staff, MVLSZ supports men’s and women’s senior and youth teams. In 2023, our youth teams achieved record success, with U20 men’s and women’s World Championships, U15 boys’ and U17 girls’ European titles, and strong showings from all teams, alongside the men’s senior team’s unforgettable World Championship win.
