About India Primary Health Care Support Initiative (IPSI)

At the India Primary Healthcare Support Initiative (IPSI), we believe that strong primary healthcare systems are the foundation of healthier, more equitable societies. India has long recognized this truth from the Bhore Committee’s vision in 1946 to the Alma-Ata Declaration of 1978 to today’s Ayushman Bharat Health & Wellness Centres (Ayushman Arogya Mandirs). These milestones reflect the country’s commitment to comprehensive primary health care (CPHC) for all. Today, the dual burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases, an aging population, urbanization, and the rising cost of care further highlights the need for a robust primary health care approach. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored how vital CPHC is not just for treatment, but also for prevention, resilience, and community trust. That’s where IPSI comes in. We work alongside state governments and local health systems to strengthen CPHC. Guided by our philosophy that Universal Health Coverage begins with CPHC, we focus on: Demonstrating solutions - piloting and scaling innovations in select districts across India. Sharing knowledge -making research, evidence, and health systems insights from across India more accessible to everyone. At IPSI, we work to support India’s vision towards a more accessible, equitable, and resilient primary health care for all.
