About Institute for Democratic Reforms and Electoral Studies - IRES

Established on March 22, 2022, the institute for Democratic Reforms & Electoral Studies (IRES) is a newly established institution in Sri Lanka’s electoral landscape. Prior to its inception, Sri Lanka hosted four active election monitoring organizations, but lacked an institution dedicated specifically to electoral studies. Therefore, IRES was founded not primarily as an election observation body, but as a dedicated institution prioritizing comprehensive electoral study, research and advocacy for electoral reforms. This distinctive and dual focus position of the IRES, as the sole entity in the region to equally prioritize election research alongside monitoring activities, make its unique and essential presence in the civil society sector.
