About Institute of Sports Medicine Copenhagen (ISMC)
The Institute of Sports Medicine Copenhagen (ISMC) is a leading joint research institute and outpatient clinic dedicated to understanding, preventing and treating musculoskeletal injuries related to physical activity. Each year, our clinic treats around 10,000 patients - from recreational exercisers to elite athletes at Bispebjerg-Frederiksberg Hospital. The ISMC is also under the Department of Clinical Medicine (IKM), University of Copenhagen. Founded in 1997 alongside the establishment of Denmark’s first professorship in Sports Medicine, ISMC has built a strong international reputation for translational, multidisciplinary research. Our core scientific focus is how muscle, tendon, connective tissue and the brain adapt to mechanical loading across the lifespan. We study responses to exercise and training, inactivity and immobilisation, injury, ageing and pharmaceutical interventions - always with the goal of translating discoveries into improved clinical care. I ISMC leads the Clinical Academic Group Physical Activity and Sports in Clinical Medicine within Copenhagen Health Science Partners and contributes actively to postgraduate teaching through MUSKOS at the University of Copenhagen, linking research, education and clinical practice.
