About International Council for Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (IC-ASM)
The International Council for Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (IC-ASM) is a dynamic global network of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) associations. It was created in January 2025 with support from the Global Centre for Minerals Security (GCMS) to represent miners who may not have access to leadership positions and to amplify their voice on the global stage. The IC-ASM was inspired by the 2018 Mosi Oa Tunya Declaration and the work of the Delve Exchange, which demonstrated the value of miner-led initiatives. Unlike the International Council for Mining and Metals (ICMM) where members must already meet the highest standards, IC-ASM associations join to learn, grow, and evolve toward global best practices. This model is designed to help miners reach a high standard of operation. The Council aims to formalise and transform the sector into a vibrant economic engine that champions gender equity, creates opportunities for young people, and empowers communities with traceable, responsibly sourced minerals. Vision: To be the global foundation for the voices of artisanal and small-scale miners (ASM), championing responsible and equitable mining practices that promote social and economic well-being. We envision ASM as a vibrant economic engine built on safety, environmental stewardship, gender equity, and community empowerment. Mission • Unite and Represent ASM Associations Worldwide Advocate for miners’ rights and meaningful inclusion in national and international policy and decision-making platforms. • Advance Responsible and Safe Mining Practices Support sustainable approaches that protect miners, communities, and the environment. • Empower ASM Communities Facilitate access to resources, training, technology, and formalisation to strengthen livelihoods and governance. • Champion Inclusion and Diversity Ensure gender equality, youth participation, and representation of marginalised groups including miners with disabilities. • Foster Global Partnerships and Dialogue
