About ISTC's Water Radiation Heavy Metal Monitoring System In Central Asia (WRHM2CA-PR206)

The WRHM2CA initiative plays a vital role in assessing the impacts of climate change on natural resources and critical infrastructure across Central Asia. As part of its mission, the project contributes to reducing environmental risks associated with uranium legacy sites and water pollution by strengthening regional capacity for water monitoring systems along transboundary rivers and their tributaries. In addition, WRHM2CA supports the expansion of laboratory infrastructure in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, specifically targeting the analysis and management of uranium-contaminated sites. The initiative is establishing a monitoring system composed of reliable, country-specific laboratory equipment and sensors that are interoperable, cost-effective, and easy to maintain. This system will generate standardized datasets that can be rapidly shared with beneficiaries in the event of an environmental emergency. Once installed, the system will be integrated into each country’s existing Environmental Security Management framework or policy. This integration will enable the consolidation of data from various national institutions, enhancing the ability to monitor and respond to the effects of climate change on vital resources and infrastructure.
