The IUCN SSC Coral Specialist Group (CSG) brings together leading scientists, practitioners, and conservationists under the Species Survival Commission of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. The CSG focuses on expert consensus to reach our primary objectives, which include updating the global extinction risk on the IUCN Red List, identifying conservation priorities, and developing actionable strategies to improve the status of coral reefs. By aligning the actions of diverse stakeholders worldwide, we strive to ensure the long-term survival of these vital ecosystems. As a Specialist Group, the CSG follows the gold standard of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. We identify and prioritise at-risk coral species, monitor threats, and analyse conservation actions to guide our efforts effectively. Nominations: In 2020, Eco Magazine nominated the IUCN SSC Coral Specialist Group as a Top 15 Coral Reef Research Contributor for the Red List assessments of coral species work. Main Actions: - Update the Global Red List of Threatened Reef-building Coral Species. - Update global policy and decision-making processes with the extinction status of reef-building corals. - Promote the production of biodiversity data at the species level for reef-building corals by facilitating the adoption of new technologies among the group's members. - Identify regional conservation priorities for Scleractinia corals and build a blueprint to improve their status. - Update the Coral Red List Index of Species Survival. https://www.iucnredlist.org/assessment/red-list-index - Identify and prioritise critical knowledge gaps and research needs. - Communicate findings relevant to the CSG to a broad range of audiences.
