About Kenya Union of Gig Workers-KUGWO

The Kenya Union of Gig Workers (KUGWO) is Kenya’s first labour union exclusively dedicated to organising and representing gig workers and platform workers across the Kenyan gig economy. We are ride-hailing drivers, delivery riders, freelancers, content creators, BPO workers, and digital labour professionals. We are the people powering Kenya’s platform economy — and we believe our work deserves dignity, fairness, protection, and a collective voice. As the gig economy in Kenya expands, many platform workers face unstable income, unilateral deactivations, opaque algorithmic management, delayed payments, and limited access to social protection. Gig workers are often classified as independent contractors without the safeguards that traditional employment provides. KUGWO exists to shift that balance. We are not a third-party service provider. KUGWO is built by gig workers, for gig workers. Our strength comes from shared experiences, structured organising, and coordinated action within Kenya’s digital labour sector. Our focus includes: • Collective bargaining for fair pay and transparent platform policies • Legal advocacy and representation in cases of unfair deactivation • Policy engagement with regulators and government institutions in Kenya • Advancing social protection pathways for informal and platform workers • Evidence and data collection to strengthen accountability • Training and capacity building for gig workers navigating the digital economy Through organising, documentation, and worker-led advocacy, we are shaping the future of fair platform work in Kenya. Every member strengthens our collective leverage and our ability to influence how the gig economy operates. If you are part of Kenya’s gig economy, you are already part of the movement. Join the Kenya Union of Gig Workers and help define the future of digital labour in Kenya.
