About La Porte Education Advising

A Positive Approach to College Admissions California native and Acalanes High School alum, Liz La Porte is an experienced high school English teacher and college counselor who provides Bay Area families with customized, strategic college admissions support. She expertly guides her students to draft and submit highly personalized college essays and maximized applications. A graduate of Swarthmore College with a B.A. in religion and from UC Berkeley with a degree in Fine Art, she later received her teaching credential - with a focus on teaching writing - from UC Berkeley's Dept. of Education. She writes a popular digital newsletter that includes practical advice and local resources, and she leads free college workshops for parents on financial aid strategies, college selection plans and successful college admission practices for all students. Liz teaches a series of well-attended college essay writing workshops which help young writers trust their natural narrative voice and have the confidence to draft engaging and distinctive essays. Liz believes in creating a positive, reflective, and learning experience for students as they make the transition from high school to college. She focuses on building self-confidence through structure and helping students complete their tasks one-step-at-a-time. Liz loves to play golf and tennis, take photographs with her 1932 Rolleiflex, and travel. She speaks Spanish and Danish (having been an AFS high school exchange student to Denmark) and would like to re-visit Mexico City, where she worked as the College Counselor at the American School Foundation. Liz is proud of her students and of her results; 90% are accepted to the schools of their choice. Congratulations to our 2018 student acceptances (partial). See complete list.
