About Lithium Battery Containers Ltd
Lithium-Ion Batteries: Powerful, Useful…but Hazardous.... Most lithium-ion batteries are generally safe but contain a lot of energy. If pierced, damaged, or defective, they are prone to dangerous reactions and rapid disassembly. Lithium-ion batteries therefore present a fire or explosion hazard from a thermal runaway event. The heat can quickly reach 2,000 C and propagate to adjacent modules and cells, so it is very dangerous and difficult to extinguish. The Lithium Battery container has been tested following the United Nations’ Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods. The tests included drop tests at 1.8 metres, and a stacking test with 3 boxes stacked on top of each other and loaded with 1,800 kg for 24 hours. The tests concluded that no flame or projectiles exited the package, the structural integrity was maintained, the emissions were managed, and the external temperature of the box did not exceed 100 oC. The packaging therefore met the requirements of ADR Packing Instruction P911 for damaged or defective lithium-ion cells and batteries. Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) Certification The drop and stack test, plus the thermal runaway event test have been assessed by the VCA, and a ‘Certificate of Packaging Performance’ has been issued to confirm that the packaging design type has been tested by an accredited laboratory and has satisfied the relevant test requirements.
