About Locked Room International Publishing

Welcome to Locked Room International Publishing (LRI)! At LRI, we celebrate one of mystery fiction’s most dazzling traditions — the locked room mystery. Rooted in the Golden Age of detection, it’s a puzzle that asks: how was it done? In these tales, a crime occurs under seemingly impossible conditions — a sealed chamber, unbroken snow, or an inaccessible setting. Realism takes a back seat to intellect and imagination: these stories exist to baffle and delight. Our Inspiration The genre’s great architect was John Dickson Carr, the American master who made England his stage. In France, Pierre Boileau (of Boileau-Narcejac) and Noël Vindry advanced the form; in Japan, Edogawa Rampo honored Poe by name and spirit. Each crafted ingenious impossibilities that continue to fascinate readers worldwide. Our Mission Two landmark surveys — in 1981 and 2007 — sought to define the greatest locked room mysteries, as detailed in A Locked Room Library. Yet many classics, particularly from France and beyond, remain untranslated. That’s where LRI steps in: to bring these brilliant works to new audiences. We publish classic and modern titles from France, Japan, Taiwan, and Sweden, along with English-language masterpieces and global short-story collections. LRI also proudly reissued Robert Adey’s essential reference Locked Room Murders and produced its updated supplement — an indispensable guide for every impossible-crime aficionado. The Modern Masters Today, two names stand at the genre’s forefront: Paul Halter and Soji Shimada. Both featured in BBC Radio 4’s “Miles Jupp in a Locked Room” — proof that the impossible crime remains as vital and mind-twisting as ever. Discover the impossible. Explore the world of LRI.
