About Long Island Invasive Species Management Area (LIISMA)
LIISMA brings together representatives from more than 50 government agencies, non-profits, businesses, and the general public to discuss, share, and learn from each other the latest invasive species management strategies and issues. Our mission is to protect human health, the economy, and public and private lands from the threat of harmful invasive plants, insect pests, and diseases. Our region covers Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island, NY. LIISMA is a program of the Long Island Native Plant Initiative (LINPI), an all-volunteer cooperative effort of over 30 non-profit organizations, governmental agencies, nursery professionals, and citizens. LINPI's mission is to protect the genetic integrity and heritage of Long Island native plant populations, and thus biodiversity from a landscape to genetic level, by establishing commercial sources of genetically appropriate local (ecotypic) plant materials for use in nurseries, landscaping, and ecological habitat restoration. LIISMA is funded by a grant from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund (EPF). EPF is administered by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC).
