About Marathi Aai Initiative (MAI)

The Marathi Aai Initiative (MAI) started with an idea put forward by Dr. Sayli Natu, to build a dedicated, supportive ecosystem for Marathi mothers, addressing the often-overlooked realities of pregnancy, postpartum, identity, and community, while also creating continuity for children growing up away from their cultural and linguistic roots. That original idea took form as a small WhatsApp group and soon Sayli along with her co-founder Kshitija Karmarkar, evolved the group into a community-led nonprofit that now brings together Marathi mothers and families across the United States. Today, MAI operates through thoughtfully designed events, conversations, resources, and advocacy, creating spaces where women lead initiatives, support one another through life transitions, and actively pass language, values, and cultural belonging to the next generation. Women in the community are encouraged to contribute based on their strengths while also developing new professional and leadership skills. MAI’s working groups are committed, skilled, and purpose-driven focused on initiatives that help women to apply their expertise, grow creatively and professionally, and collectively move the community, their children, and their work forward.
