Marc Sherratt, Sustainability Architects (MSSA) is a research-led, impact-driven architectural practice who design climate resilient responses to the wicked problems found in Africa’s built environment. MSSA is considered one of the leaders of the green building movement on the African continent. In response to climate change, they were the first architectural firm in South Africa to pledge to reach Net Zero emissions as a company by 2030 as part of the ACA facilitated by WWF, C40 and the NBI. Their skill lies in leading interdisciplinary professional teams, who have achieved some of Africa’s first Net Zero certified buildings. A Net Zero building is one that does zero harm to its natural environment in quantifiable categories such as carbon emissions, water, ecology and waste. MSSA has supported national governments, corporates and NGOs implement their climate action and ESG plans through a service offering covering all stages of a building’s lifespan, from design to improving operations to disassembly. MSSA’s business incubator develops architectural technology and products that can be scaled to help reverse climate change and biodiversity loss. Being both green building experts and architects, environmental sustainability is integrated as part of a net zero design process from a project’s conception. Based in one of the financial capitals of the continent, Johannesburg, they are ideally located to work across Africa with experience in both urban and rural contexts. Their work focuses on pushing the boundaries of sustainable design in Africa’s built environment. They have worked on sites of high environmental, social and heritage sensitivity, including UNESCO World Heritage sites, completing projects in informal settlements, public transport, healthcare, education, social housing and cultural building types.
