About Mathematics for a Lifetime

Mathematics for a Lifetime (MFAL) is a New Zealand charity that funds one-to-one maths tuition for students who would otherwise be unable to access it. We focus on more than academic results. Our work builds confidence, strengthens capability, and opens up opportunities that extend well beyond the classroom. Many students fall behind in maths not because of ability, but because they lack access to the right support at the right time. For families facing financial pressure, tuition is often out of reach, and without help, gaps widen, confidence drops, and students begin to disengage from learning altogether. Maths is a foundation skill. It underpins everyday decision-making, financial literacy, and future employment pathways. When confidence in maths declines, the impact reaches far beyond the classroom. MFAL removes the cost barrier by funding one-to-one, curriculum-aligned maths tuition with Approved Tutors. This individualised approach ensures that each student receives targeted support specific to their needs, pace, and learning style. Students are matched with experienced tutors who provide structured, consistent support. Progress is monitored through regular reporting, capturing not only academic improvement but also shifts in confidence, engagement, and attitude toward learning. This allows us to track what’s working, ensure accountability, and continuously improve the support we provide. We see students move from avoidance to participation, from frustration to understanding, and from “I can’t do this” to “I’m starting to get it.” These shifts matter, and they are often the turning point that enables further progress, both in education and in life. We rely on the support of donors, partners, and community to fund access to tuition for students. If you want to help a student build confidence, capability, and opportunity through maths, we’d welcome your support.
