For more than 56 years, the McPherson Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has proudly served the residents, businesses, and industries of McPherson, Kansas, and the surrounding area with safe, clean water and affordable, reliable electric service. As a community-owned municipal utility, we are committed not only to delivering essential services but also to strengthening the hometown we proudly call home. Our team of more than 70 dedicated employees lives and works in the communities we serve. They are linemen, plant operators, water and maintenance crews, customer service representatives, and technology specialists—but first and foremost, they are our neighbors, and their commitment, pride, and dedication drive everything we do. BPU is a vertically integrated electric utility responsible for generation, transmission, and distribution, serving a peak load of 171 megawatts while maintaining more than 235 megawatts of generation capacity to meet local demand and support neighboring utilities. Through a hardened electric system, BPU delivers exceptional reliability with a SAIDI rating of 49.11 (>99.99%), all while maintaining the lowest electric rates in Kansas and among the lowest in the nation. For water service, BPU owns and operates 15 water wells and more than 150 miles of water main, supported by a newly commissioned well field 20 miles south of McPherson that secures long-term water rights and sustainable infrastructure for generations to come.
