About Mental Health Initiative for South Asians
MHISA is a 501(c)(3) that leverages research, education, and resource development to address barriers to mental health care amongst South Asian-Americans. We recognize that South Asian communities and the mental health care system are not effectively integrated. MHISA conducts data-driven research to understand why this friction exists and develops interventions to connect South Asians to care and educate communities on why mental health matters. With university chapters around the country and an expanding team of students and experts, MHISA aims to bridge gaps for both South Asian communities and enable change-makers in health care. This is achieved by researching attitudes and barriers to mental health care through a South Asian lens, engaging communities through a guided framework, and developing novel resources.
