About Metro East Literacy Project

The purpose of the Metro East Literacy Project is to promote literacy to adults and children by providing access to books, libraries, reading lessons, and quality reading experiences. Specifically, this means we host book giveaway events in our book desert communities. We also give books away to families living in shelters and to parent organizations. Our activities are guided by the Five Pillars of Family Literacy, which can be viewed on our website. Our approach to tackling low third grade reading proficiency is to focus on the home side of the equation. Teachers should always be well trained and prepared to teach the fundamentals of reading. And, parents should always read to their children. However, it may be even more important for parents to read for themselves so they can model the love of reading for their children. (See Pillar Number Two). This approach is called the Imitate Reading Initiative.
