About Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel
MARSP was founded in 1951, a time when many public school employees retired with meager, often insufficient pensions (if they qualified at all) and no access to affordable healthcare. Retirement security was fragile, and few protections existed for those who had dedicated their lives to public education. We joined a growing national movement and, in 1952, helped the NRTA secure group health insurance for retired teachers — the first of its kind in the United States. MARSP understands the value of a strong retirement system and what it takes to sustain it. Through the combined efforts of members, a full-time staff, and our lobbying partner in Lansing, MARSP continues fighting for retirement necessities on behalf of ALL Michigan’s public school employees.
