About Midtown Show

Midtown Show is a live audience perception lab. We test comedy and content against real rooms, measure how different audiences interpret the same material, and publish what the room reveals. Messages either land or they don't — we show you why, before you ship. A live room is the only honest focus group. Surveys filter through self-presentation. Analytics arrive too late. Laughter (and silence) arrive in real time, from real people, with no incentive to be polite. Findings from the lab include: Room Sense Live — our primary instrument. Comedians workshop material against AI audience personas before performing live. Sets pre-tested in Room Sense had 40% fewer flat segments on stage. Pre-testing against simulated audiences cuts on-stage failure rate without making material safer — it exposes weaknesses the performer can fix before the room sees them. The Callback Experiment — the same five-minute set, three audience configurations. Audiences with shared cultural context caught callbacks 3x more often. Callbacks fail in mixed rooms; they need to anchor to something the whole audience witnessed together. Laugh Spike Alignment — peak laugh moments diverged by up to 12 seconds across age-segmented audiences for identical material. Younger audiences laughed at subversion; older audiences at recognition. Any message meant to land across demographics has to carry both entry points or pick one. Midtown Show is the live lab for Humor Genome, a research program on audience-dependent meaning. Findings become systems that ship on sound.fan. We also run the Humor Hackathon — 48-hour builds tested against live audiences. Sponsorship tiers available for organizations who want to embed, co-define challenges, or fund continued development.
