About Mohawk Council of Akwesasne
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) is the elected government of the Mohawk Territory of Akwesasne, representing the interests and well-being of the Akwesasró:non community. MCA encompasses both the Council, which provides governance and political leadership, and the broader organizational structure responsible for delivering community programs and services. Twelve District Chiefs and one Grand Chief, elected by the community, form the Mohawk Council. They take political responsibility for specific areas of community work and participate in portfolio committees to guide strategic priorities. The MCA organization functions independently from the Council in the delivery of programs and services, ensuring that operational decisions are made based on community needs while maintaining accountability and transparency. MCA employs between 700 and 1,000 people across areas including law enforcement, education, health care, administrative services, infrastructure, and governance. MCA is organized into ten departments: • Executive Services • Department of Communications • Department of Community and Social Services (DCSS) • Department of Economic Development (ECDEV) • Department of Finance & Administration (DFA) • Department of Health (DOH) • Department of Infrastructure, Housing & Environment (DIHE) • Akwesasne Justice Department (AJD) • Ahkwesáhsne Mohawk Board of Education (AMBE) • Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service (AMPS) Together, the Council and MCA staff work collaboratively to deliver programs, services, and initiatives that strengthen community connection, preserve culture, and support the needs of Akwesasró:non.
