About Montana NSF EPSCoR

Montana NSF EPSCoR is a Montana University System program dedicated to strengthening Montana’s research capacity and competitiveness in science and engineering. In partnership with the National Science Foundation’s EPSCoR (Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research), we develop and manage strategic, multi-institutional projects funded through competitive NSF awards. We collaborate across Montana’s higher education institutions—including seven tribal colleges—and with partners in business, government, and non-profit sectors. With offices at the University of Montana and Montana State University, our work is designed to build sustainable research infrastructure and foster long-term innovation. Our current initiative, the SMART FIRES RII Track-1 Project (2023–2028), addresses the growing impact of wildfire in Montana. This statewide effort brings together researchers, agencies, and communities to advance the science and application of prescribed fire, develop new technologies, and create educational opportunities that help Montanans live with and manage wildfire more effectively.
