About Mthunzi Minds

Mthunzi Minds is a youth-led mental health and wellbeing initiative based in Malawi, working at the intersection of mental health, environmental stewardship, and community resilience. Young people in Malawi face growing mental health challenges, limited access to early support, and few safe spaces to talk, reflect, and heal. These challenges are often worsened by social, economic, and environmental stressors within their communities. Mthunzi Minds responds by combining mental health awareness and early psychosocial support with nature-based and community-driven approaches. We integrate peer support, safe outdoor and community spaces, and environmental action to create inclusive environments where young people can connect, reflect, and build emotional resilience. Our work primarily serves adolescents and young adults, while engaging schools, communities, and local partners to strengthen support systems around them. We collaborate with researchers, practitioners, and institutions to ensure our programs are evidence-informed, culturally grounded, and responsive to local realities. We believe that caring for the mind and caring for the environment are deeply connected. By supporting both, Mthunzi Minds aims to contribute to healthier, more resilient individuals and communities over the long term.
