About National Podoconiosis Action Network (NaPAN)
The National Podoconiosis Action Network (NaPAN) is a consortium of local and international organizations united by a shared commitment to alleviating suffering, preventing disability, ending neglect, and reducing stigma associated with skin Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). Initially established in 2011 to address a single disease of major public health importance—podoconiosis—NaPAN was formed by four organizations that had previously worked in a scattered manner. By joining forces, they created a coordinated platform that elevated podoconiosis to the level of a national public health priority. Since its inception, NaPAN has grown to include eleven active member organizations and has expanded its scope beyond podoconiosis to encompass a wider range of skin NTDs, including lymphatic filariasis, cutaneous leishmaniasis, and scabies. Over the years, NaPAN has achieved significant milestones, ensuring morbidity management and disability prevention (MMDP) services in more than 250 podoconiosis endemic districts and 100 lymphatic filariasis endemic districts. It has mobilized both local and international expertise and resources to strengthen health systems, build workforce capacity, and deliver patient centred care. Equally important, NaPAN has worked to confront the severe stigma faced by affected communities. Through community education events, radio campaigns, and the development of tailored IEC/BCC materials, it has promoted awareness, reduced discrimination, and fostered dignity for patients. Today, NaPAN stands as a leading platform for collaboration, advocacy, and innovation in Ethiopia’s fight against skin NTDs, positioning itself as a key partner in integrating NTD services into the broader health system and advancing national health priorities. Vision: To see Ethiopia free of podoconiosis and related skin NTDs Mission: NaPAN strives to coordinate and standardize efforts for alleviating suffering, preventing disability, reducing stigma.
