About NBO Film Festival

The NBO Film Festival is one of the most anticipated cultural events in East Africa, attracting filmmakers, critics, and cinephiles from across the region. Held annually in the heart of Kenya’s capital, the festival showcases a wide array of films, from feature-length dramas to cutting-edge documentaries and short films. By promoting reflection on Kenyan identity and celebrating independent cinema, the festival fosters a dynamic film culture. It is committed to showcasing Kenyan art and film, inspiring audiences to explore the nation’s rich storytelling. In its first three editions, the festival hosted world premieres of top Kenyan films, including ‘Lusala’ (which had its international premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam) and ‘Supa Modo’ which became Kenya’s 2019 Foreign Language Oscar®️ submission after winning 44 international awards and securing an extended cinema run. NBO Film Festival also advocates for the expression of all Kenyan voices, fostering discussions around previously banned films like ‘Stories of Our Lives’ and ‘Rafiki’. It has been a springboard for the theatrical releases of Kenyan films such as ‘New Moon’, ‘Disconnect’ and ‘Softie’, the latter of which received a great deal of positive media and community engagement in Kenya and abroad.
