About New Zealand National Eye Bank

The New Zealand National Eye Bank (NZNEB) is a non-profit organisation, partially funded by the Ministry of Health, dedicated to the prevention of blindness through the provision of donated corneal and other tissues. It is based in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Auckland, School of Medicine, Grafton opposite Auckland Hospital. Since 1991 the Eye Bank has supplied over 7000 corneas to New Zealanders. For someone with a damaged cornea, a corneal transplant is often their only hope of restoring vision. Currently, around 300 people in New Zealand require a corneal transplant each year - Without a transplant, these people would become blind or severely vision impaired. HOW DO I BECOME AN EYE DONOR? • Most importantly, tell your family of your wishes. Consent from next-of-kin is always required, so it is important they know of your wishes. It will make their decision easier at a sad and difficult time. Without your next-of-kin’s consent, no donation will occur. • Note on your driver’s license that expresses your wish to be a donor. Your family, hospital staff, GP, or funeral director can contact the National Eye Bank 24/7 by phone: 0800 3737 537 Address: Level 4, building 504, 85 Park Road Grafton, Auckland 1023.
