About One Health Against Pathogens

As the effects of globalization, climate change, and antimicrobial resistance intensify, models predict an unsustainable and worsening burden on human health, creating an urgent need to integrate research, surveillance systems, and public policy to control the spread of food-borne, water-borne, vector-borne, and zoonotic (FWVZ) pathogens. The current sociopolitical landscape, however, seems to discourage the dissemination of difficult facts with little apparent public demand for sound, science-backed policy. Scientists must then learn to effectively communicate their evidence to politicians and the general public, expanding their skill sets beyond the horizons of traditional academic research training. Recognizing this critical skill gap, leading experts at McGill University, the University of Guelph, l’Université de Montréal, and the University of Saskatchewan came together to found One Health Against Pathogens (OHAP), an NSERC-supported Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) program. OHAP trains experts in interdisciplinary research, communication, and effective public policy crafting, with One Health as its guiding philosophy, recognizing the profound interconnections of animal, environmental, and human health. Open to incoming Master's and PhD students at our partnering schools, and selecting for those with existing interdisciplinary or intersectoral ties, our goal is to provide future public health leaders with the system-level understandings of FWVZ pathogens and honed skills in knowledge translation needed to advocate for sound, science-backed policy.
