O.R.C.A.S. Society of BC (Optimize Response Care for Autism Safety Society of BC) is a British Columbia–based nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing autism safety across our communities — particularly during interactions with first responders and emergency services. Founded in 2025 by Sylvain Formo, a person with autism, ORCAS was created in response to a growing and urgent gap in crisis response and public safety. Individuals on the autism spectrum often face heightened risks of miscommunication, sensory overload, escalation, and trauma during emergency situations. Families frequently express fear and uncertainty about how these interactions may unfold. ORCAS exists to change that experience. We focus on proactive, prevention-based solutions that strengthen understanding, preparedness, and trust between the autism community and frontline responders. Our core areas of work include: • Autism-informed training for police, fire, ambulance, and emergency personnel • Safety education and preparedness resources for individuals, families, and caregivers • Development and distribution of sensory tools to support crisis response • Advocacy and legal education related to human rights and justice system navigation • Community engagement initiatives that foster positive relationships between first responders and families ORCAS actively serves, builds partnerships and expanding programming across British Columbia. Our leadership includes individuals with autism, autism-sector professionals, and essential services providers, ensuring our work is grounded in lived experience, professional expertise, and operational realities. ORCAS is committed to creating safer interactions, informed responders, and stronger, more inclusive communities throughout British Columbia.
