The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with a population exceeding 78 million, faces challenges such as political instability, extreme poverty, gender inequality, and human rights violations. Particularly affecting rural women, these issues hinder progress in health, well-being, and economic opportunities. Despite adversities, the Congolese display resilience, seeking opportunities to invest in their families and communities. Rural communities, predominantly comprised of subsistence farmers, struggle to support their families due to a lack of collateral for accessing credit from traditional financial institutions. To address this, asset transfer and microfinance programs have gained popularity, offering a viable solution to improve the overall well-being of individuals, families, and communities. Originally a collaboration between PAIDEK, a local Congolese microfinance organization, and Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in the US, PFP emerged as a response to a decade-long public health research study. This study examined the correlation between enhanced economic opportunities in rural communities and its impact on gender equality, intimate partner violence, mental health, and environmental sustainability. Formerly named the “Pigs for Peace Demonstration Project,” PFP has now evolved into an independent, locally-managed social impact enterprise. Focused on sustaining its successful livestock microfinance program, expanding regional reach, and developing new income-generating activities, PFP seeks to empower women, families, and communities. The ultimate objective is to foster self-sufficiency, pride, and solidarity, empowering individuals to break the cycle of extreme poverty.
