About Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association-RWCA

Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association (RWCA) is a conservation organisation applying home-grown solutions to protect and restore threatened wildlife and wild places. We work across species threat reduction, research and monitoring, wildlife interventions, conservation education, community engagement and livelihoods, and the restoration and protection of natural habitats. RWCA is best known for leading Rwanda’s successful fight against the illegal trade of the Endangered Grey Crowned Cranes. Over the past decade, we have removed all cranes from captivity and stopped poaching at its source. As a result, Rwanda’s Grey Crowned Crane population has more than quadrupled, from fewer than 300 cranes in 2015 to 1,245 in 2025, with zero cranes remaining in captivity. In the last decade, RWCA has grown from a small, single-species initiative into a leading force for wildlife conservation across Rwanda. Building on our success with cranes, we now work to protect a wider range of species and ecosystems nationwide. RWCA is now expanding its crane conservation efforts beyond Rwanda’s borders. In collaboration with partners in Uganda, Tanzania, and Burundi, we are leading cross-border initiatives to safeguard Grey Crowned Cranes and their habitats across the East African region. Mission: To apply home-grown solutions to protect and restore threatened wildlife and wild places. Vision: To be the premier organisation sustaining free-living wild animals in Rwanda and the East African region. Learn more: www.rwandawildlife.org
