About SafeMan SafeFamily Charitable Trust

SafeMan SafeFamily works to help men break the cycle of violence through a process of recovery which is life-changing, life-long and transferable. Participants become men skilled up to create positive legacies that their families and communities can be proud of. SafeMan SafeFamily does outreach work in various locations to help men break free of the cycle of violence. The SafeMan SafeFamily programme is built on a peer-to-peer network of ‘Safe Men’ – former perpetrators who have been on a journey of recovery from lives of violence, and are now “safe”. They play a mentoring role, providing outreach and engagement, and ongoing coaching and support, similar to the 12-step AA model. The Redemption Journey was developed through whānau voice and testing over several years, and was evaluated as part of a pilot evaluation (Evaluation 2023). The Redemption Journey utilises evidence good practice including narrative therapy techniques, trauma informed approaches and peer support. Staff and peers adhere to the redemption journey, which includes the steps of Uncover, Discover, Recover, and Thrive. This natural progression supports men through healing, learning, and lasting change. SafeMan SafeFamily offers support at each stage of this process; Uncover: Men assess their past traumas and understand the roots of their violent actions. Discover: They explore healthier coping mechanisms and relationship- building strategies. Recover: They implement their newfound knowledge and strive for lasting change. Thrive: Men celebrate their progress in their own ways.
