About San Diego Collaborative Arts Project

San Diego Collaborative Arts Project (SDCAP) is a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to supporting artists, makers, and communities through collaborative, community-driven creative projects. Based in San Diego, SDCAP works to remove barriers to artistic expression by providing access to space, tools, education, and mentorship for people at all levels of experience. At the heart of SDCAP’s work is SD CoLab, a volunteer-run community maker space that offers free or cost-of-materials access to tools and training in woodworking, CNC routing, laser cutting, electronics, screen printing, sewing, 3D printing, and more. CoLab serves as a hub where individuals can learn new skills, develop large-scale art projects, and collaborate across disciplines in an inclusive, non-hierarchical environment. SDCAP is also the producer of YOUtopia, San Diego’s official regional Burning Man arts and culture festival, now in its 19th year. Created entirely by volunteers, YOUtopia brings together artists, musicians, builders, and community members to co-create an immersive, participatory experience rooted in radical self-expression, inclusion, and civic responsibility. Proceeds from the festival are reinvested into CoLab, year-round community programs and artist support. Through public art installations, workshops, neighborhood events, and large collaborative builds, SDCAP engages thousands of participants annually. Its programs emphasize hands-on learning, mentorship, leadership development, and creative problem-solving—helping individuals transform ideas into tangible works that enrich San Diego’s cultural landscape. Guided by the principles of participation, communal effort, and radical inclusion, SDCAP believes that strong communities are built when people are empowered to create together. By fostering accessible creative infrastructure and supporting artists at every stage, SDCAP strengthens San Diego’s arts ecosystem and contributes to vibrant, connected neighborhoods throughout
