It represents the awareness that our personal histories include both good and painful experiences, yet all are integral in forming who we are today. Sankofa translates to "Go back, seek and retrieve it". It is understood that in order to move forward in life, the knowledge and lessons of the past must be held closely and intentionally incorporated into who we are today.
