About Sexual Wellness for Aging Adults

Sexual Wellness for Aging Adults (SWELLAA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting sexual wellness in aging populations through education, certification, and research. We draw on Mitchell et al.’s (2021) definition of sexual wellness as rooted in the interrelated dimensions of sexual justice, health, and pleasure—core indicators of well-being and health equity. Research underscores that sexual well-being supports physical health, psychological resilience, and life satisfaction (Gore-Gorszewska, 2021; Souza Junior et al., 2021). Yet no universal standards exist for professionals serving older adults. Personal values—shaped by ageism, heterosexism, ableism, and cultural scripts—often guide treatment of sexuality in aging communities. Without open communication, stigma and misinformation suppress expression and harm well-being (Le et al., 2024; Siraj & Dahlke, 2024; March, 2018). Key insights: • Sexuality in later life supports cardiovascular health, mood, and relationship quality (Souza Junior et al., 2021). • Self-esteem and social connection remain deeply linked across the lifespan (Harris & Orth, 2020). • STI rates among adults 65+ have more than doubled in the past decade (AMA, 2025). • 93% of aging adults live with chronic conditions affecting sexuality (Watson et al., 2025). • About 20% never discuss sexuality with providers (March, 2018; Plaut et al., 2015). Our Vision of Health Equity Founded in 2025, SWELLAA advances sex-positive, inclusive standards that affirm pleasure and intimacy at every age. We prioritize the experiences of marginalized groups—including LGBTQIA+ elders, BIPOC communities, low-income individuals, and those who are chronically ill, differently abled, or neurodivergent. We recognize that queer elders and elders of color face intersecting systems of oppression—racism, heteronormativity, and ageism—that limit access to affirming care (Fredriksen-Goldsen et al., 2017; Fleishman et al., 2020).
