About Sheffield Cathedral: A Place for All People
Sheffield Cathedral aspires to be ‘A Place for all People’ (and dogs!). It even has its own tram stop! People have been gathering on the site of Sheffield Cathedral for over a thousand years, evidenced by a Saxon Cross on display in the British Museum. Granted Cathedral status in 1914, the cathedral is the oldest building in Sheffield to be open 365 days a year. It is a Grade 1 listed building with significant local, regional and national importance. At its heart Sheffield Cathedral is a place of worship with a growing congregation of people originating from countries across the world. It is a holy place where prayers are said daily and where people can seek quiet space and sanctuary within its ancient walls. Sitting at the heart of Sheffield, the cathedral also tells the story of the origins of the city from the early 12th century, its development through the years, its industrial heritage and an association with the cutlery and silver industries. Today the Cathedral meets the needs of a multicultural community, welcoming thousands of visitors every year for services, guided tours and a range of cultural events, concerts and exhibitions to enjoy, as well as providing educational and musical opportunities for children and young people. There are also meeting rooms and affordable event space for hire. Within the cathedral is the award-winning family friendly 1554 Coffee and Gift Shop stocked full of locally sourced gifts, food and beverages, including the Heavenly Coffee! The Cathedral even has its own Sheffield ‘mark’.
