About Shrewsbury Newport Canals Trust
Along a quiet lane, on the outskirts of north Telford, sits a rare survivor of our Industrial Revolution, Wappenshall Wharf. Until recently the site was inaccessible and virtually unknown to the 170,000 people who live within the Borough of Telford & Wrekin, and the many hundreds of thousands more who live beyond and visit this region each year. The project to restore this site aims to secure the future of two historically significant canal warehouses, both Grade II listed, a skew bridge, which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and a canal basin that became a crucial focal point in the waterway network. The site will be transformed into a vibrant hub of activity through: • exciting heritage learning and participation programmes • engaging people via creative interpretation • new opportunities for volunteering, skills development and training • heritage research and recording projects • conservation and celebration of nationally important heritage • improved biodiversity and wildlife habitats • a much-needed venue and focal point for local communities • inspirational activities for everyone • a high-quality café.
