About Skiddaw House Foundation

The Foundation exists to maintain Skiddaw House and its infrastructure. The premises are sub-let to a warden who runs an independent hostel affiliated to the Youth Hostel Association. Skiddaw House, also known as England's Remotest House, was built in 1829 as a keepers lodge for George Wyndham, the third Earl of Egremont in support of his grouse shooting in the surrounding Skiddaw Forest. The building housed a gamekeeper and a shepherd and their respective families. After falling into disrepair, the building was renovated and opened as a youth hostel in 1986. Skiddaw Forest, which is not actually a forest but mainly open fells, is now owned by Cumbria Wildlife Trust who have plans to rewild this amazing and remote part of The Lake District.
