About Skin Barrier Research Group
The Skin Barrier Research Group at Charles University conducts advanced research in skin lipids and drug delivery. We synthesize key human skin barrier lipids, including ultralong ceramides, their analogs, and labeled variants. Our work supports improved lipid analysis, deepens insight into skin lipid biophysics and permeability, and helps model skin conditions such as ichthyosis and atopic dermatitis. Our research includes permeation experiments in human skin and the development of strategies for transdermal and topical drug delivery, utilizing permeation enhancers and nano- and microformulations. We employ a range of analytical and biophysical techniques to characterize skin structure and function, including HPTLC and LC/MS for lipid analysis and FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and confocal Raman microspectroscopy for structural studies of the skin barrier.
