About Sorora Safety
Sorora Safety is a women focused safety initiative dedicated to creating safer spaces for women, teens, and vulnerable individuals through accessible technology and strong community collaboration. Sorora was founded by Melanie Gonzalez, Ashwini Gamage, and Hemali Chudasama, driven by a shared commitment to addressing gaps in personal safety and emergency response. What began as a youth-led idea evolved into a real world initiative after Sorora won the Pitch to the Chief: Youth Edition competition in collaboration with the Cobourg Police Service and the Town of Cobourg. Today, Sorora is being developed through university partnerships, bringing together students, public safety leaders, and community stakeholders to turn innovation into impact. The team is currently building an SOS mobile app designed to provide quick, discreet access to help when seconds matter. At its core, Sorora is about empowerment. Beyond technology, we aim to amplify women’s voices in STEM, promote safety education, and foster communities where everyone feels supported, protected, and heard.
