About SOUTH AND SOUTH EAST IN BLOOM

South & South East in Bloom is part of Britain in Bloom and runs annual competitions across the counties of Kent, Surrey, East & West Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, East & North Dorset and East Wiltshire. Each year entries participate from Villages, Parishes, Towns, Cities, Coastal Towns, Town & City Centres, Urban Communities and Business Improvement Districts. Our judges/ assessors visit communities and awards are presented to recognise the entries achievements. We also run and organise the RHS Its Your Neighbourhood campaign (Community Gardening) on their behalf in our region. There are many misconceptions about “Bloom” the main one being that as the name implies its all about Summer bedding displays, Hanging Baskets and Window Boxes but that was bloom decades ago. So, while gardening, planting and creating attractive places is an important element, it is now as much about caring for our environment and wishing to see the community and community volunteers becoming involved in caring for their place Participating communities are asked to focus their initiatives on three main areas: Horticultural Achievement Environmental Responsibility Community Participation Communities that participate in South & South in Bloom benefit in a variety of ways but the most common benefits are: Cleaner and greener surroundings Creating a sense of community through improvement of public spaces and positive interaction between community members An increase in civic pride and sense of community empowerment by engaging people in the improvement of their own community Safer environments for the enjoyment of local people Long term improvement for the environment by addressing issues such as sustainability, resource management, conservation, litter, graffiti etc. Reduction in anti-social behaviour Positive effects on the local economy such as increased commercial enterprise and increased tourism Regeneration of run down and/or disadvantaged areas
