State Bank of India (SBI) is an Indian public sector multinational bank and the largest bank in India by assets, market share, and number of branches, headquartered in Mumbai. Tracing its origins to the Bank of Calcutta established in 1806, SBI was nationalized in its current form on 1 July 1955, and today holds approximately 23% of the Indian banking market with over 500 million customers. The bank employs nearly 250,000 people and operates thousands of branches across India and offices in dozens of countries.
