About Stiftung Righini-Fries

The Righini-Fries Foundation maintains the artistic and written legacy of the Righini-Fries dynasty of artists, namely the three artistic personalities Sigismund Righini (1870-1937), Willy Fries (1881-1965) and Hanny Fries (1918-2009), who all worked and lived in Zurich. The main task of the foundation is to research and communicate the life and work of the three painters mentioned. Sigismund Righini is regarded as one of the pioneers of the new Swiss modernism after 1900 with his colour-intensive paintings, while his son-in-law Willy Fries made a name for himself as a portrait painter and was known for his ironically tinged social scenes. His daughter Hanny Fries, in turn, became famous for her theatre drawings and her painterly passion for public spaces such as waiting rooms, cafés or parks. The three-generation Righini-Fries family of artists left a lasting mark on Zurich and Swiss art, not least through their commitment to cultural politics. Sigismund Righini was a vehement advocate of Swiss artists and stood up for their interests in numerous committees and commissions. The following generations also took on various offices in the service of the arts and thus followed in the footsteps of the "art pope" Righini. Since 2013, the Righini-Fries Foundation has been running the museum "Atelier Righini Fries" in the former artist's studio at Klosbachstrasse 150 with changing exhibitions and events. The twice-yearly special shows as well as guided tours, scenic readings, panel discussions and performances make the Atelier Righini Fries a lively art and cultural venue in Zurich's Kreis 7.
