About Support After Suicide

POSTVENTION IS PREVENTION We strongly believe that postvention is suicide prevention. Effective and compassionate postvention provides a vital contribution to the mental health and wellbeing of people impacted by suicide loss. Research shows that people bereaved by suicide present higher levels of depression, and suicide ideation and behaviour than other bereaved people*. It is in the broad and deep ways we support people bereaved by suicide that helps prevent mental health issues, prevent substance abuse, prevent feelings of isolation and loneliness, and as a result, helps prevent further suicides. SPECIALISED COUNSELLING The Support After Suicide counsellors are experts in bereavement, trauma and responding to those who are experiencing suicidality. There is no specific number of sessions or length of time counselling is provided; support is based on the needs of our participants. LIVED EXPERIENCE Our regular support groups are facilitated by a bereavement counsellor and a trained lived experience volunteer. Our groups offer people the opportunity to spend time and communicate with others bereaved by suicide, experience being understood and not feel so alone, and learn strategies to help find their way through the grief and trauma. We have over 50 lived experience volunteers that provide important support to our groups, workshops and peer support program. COMMUNITY COORDINATION Our Postvention Coordination team provides a coordinated response after a suicide within a community, particularly if it impacts young people. It aims to mitigate community impact and reduce the risk of suicide following a death that is likely to have widespread impact. PARTNERSHIPS We work with Switchboard Victoria to provide specialist suicide bereavement support to LGBTQIA+ communities. We have also launched SASH, the first national online community for LGBTQIA+ people bereaved by suicide. Visit sash.org.au ONLINE RESOURCES Visit our website for useful information and resources.
