About Sustainable Infrastructure and Geoengineering Lab (SIGLab)

The Sustainable Infrastructure and Geoengineering Laboratory (SIGLab), founded by Dr. Pooneh Maghoul at Polytechnique Montréal, develops cutting-edge solutions and technologies to address critical challenges related to the resilience and sustainability of civil and mining infrastructure in the face of climate and disaster risks (thawing permafrost, landslides, earthquakes, wildfires) as well as off-Earth construction and mining. Our forward-looking research program focuses on the following key infrastructure areas: 🎯 Advancements in digital twin platforms for climate resilience of civil and mining geo-infrastructure, especially northern infrastructure. 🎯 Innovations in smart mining technologies, soft sensors for critical minerals prospecting, and underground exploration. 🎯 Development of advanced materials and low-carbon processes for soil stabilization and carbon/methane/radon sequestration. 🎯 Automation and robotic tools for modernizing geotechnical, mining, and construction practices (Construction and mine 4.0). 🎯 Advanced non-destructive methods and tools for structural health monitoring and reuse of aging infrastructure. 🎯 Utilization of in-situ resources and mine/construction waste (circularity) for resilient modular construction on Earth and beyond. 🎯 Energy transition through the design, implementation, and operation of Small Modular Reactors, energy geostructures, and underground storage solutions for hydrogen and CO2. 🎯 Lunar/planetary geotechnics, Lunar infrastructure, and In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU). SIGLab collaborates extensively with over 15 industrial partners and 30 academics globally. Interdisciplinarity, entrepreneurship, as well as the valorization and impact of research results are at the core of SIGLab's activities.
