About Sydney Spine Institute

The Sydney Spine Institute was founded in 2007, initially as a clinical centre born from the partnership of two medical professionals, Associate Professor James van Gelder and Dr Henry Lam. They recognized early on that the realm of spinal medicine was complex, and no single specialty possessed all the answers. Patients grappling with spinal issues needed a comprehensive approach to their care. While multidisciplinary units were relatively common in the public healthcare system, the concept of a multidisciplinary clinic in the private healthcare sector was innovative at the time. Over the years, the Sydney Spine Institute has evolved into a hub for clinical collaboration among specialists and allied health professionals who share a common vision of delivering the best possible care and outcomes for individuals affected by both common and complex spinal conditions. Parallel to our clinical operations, a dedicated research division has been established within the organisation with two main research streams: a clinical and a biomedical. The development of our research division has been an organic process, driven by longstanding partnerships with universities, local health districts, and other research institutions, bolstered by our commitment to exploring new treatments and cutting-edge technologies.
