About Takano Landscape Planning

Takano Landscape Planning (TLP) is an award winning Landscape Architecture Practice based in Hokkaido, Japan. Takano Fumiaki began the practice in Tokyo in 1975, before deciding to move his studio and home to a rural farming village in Hokkaido in 1990. TLP now has several offices in Japan, a branch in Taiwan and associated firms in France and Malaysia. Specialising in the design of large-scale parks, resort landscapes, gardens, childrens play and forest rehabilitation, the practice utilises a unique design process strongly embedded in community consultation. Awards include the IFLA Merit Award for Tokachi Millennium Forest 2009, Park of the Year for Showa Childrens Playground Tokyo in 1993 from the Japanese Ministry of Construction, and the Médaille de l’or for the restoration of a Japanese garden awarded by the Dept. Hauts-de-Seine France in 1991. Takano frequently presents as a keynote speaker at international conferences and is invited to guest lecture at universities around the world. An avid horseman and competitive showjumper, he continues to live with his wife and two horses on a small farm close to his rural Hokkaido practice.
