The Tashkent Scientific Research Institute of Vaccines and Serums, with a history of over a century, is entering a new stage of development. Founded on September 17, 1918 by order of the People’s Commissariat of Health of the Republic of Turkestan, the institute began as a microbiological laboratory in Tashkent, later evolving into the Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology. At that time, smallpox and plague were widespread across Central Asia, and the epidemiological situation was extremely challenging. The institute concentrated its efforts on eradicating these diseases and improving public health throughout the region. By 1950, several laboratories and production departments were established, and that same year, the Council of Ministers of the USSR renamed it the Tashkent Research Institute of Vaccines and Serums, transferring it to the Ministry of Health of the USSR. Today, the institute has state-of-the-art research and production facilities, translating scientific findings into practical solutions, including vaccines, serums, medicines, diagnostic tools, and novel vaccine technologies. Recent work includes advancing mRNA vaccine development, positioning the institute at the forefront of next-generation vaccine research. Key activities include: Research in epidemiology and microbiology of infectious diseases in Uzbekistan. Development and evaluation of vaccines, serums, and diagnostic products, including mRNA-based vaccines. Scientific and methodological support for epidemiological laboratories and supplying vaccine materials. Consultation with local health authorities on epidemic control. The institute’s earliest publications addressed plague and smallpox, laying a strong foundation for its ongoing leadership in public health innovation.
