About The Champ Foundation

The Champ Foundation is a patient-led organization with a mission to support research toward better treatment and a cure for single large-scale mitochondrial DNA syndromes, like deletion Pearson Syndrome. Pearson Syndrome is often fatal in infancy. The Champ Foundation has awarded over $2 million in grants to researchers and scientists, including supporting the preclinical research that was used to support the first ever FDA approved clinical trial for Pearson Syndrome. In 2020, The Champ Foundation was awarded a $450,000 grant by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) to develop and launch a collaborative SLSMDS Research Network. This grant is part of CZI’s Rare As One Project, aimed at supporting and lifting up the work that patient communities are doing to accelerate research and drive progress in the fight against rare diseases.
